Sunday Bookends: a little outing and a book sale

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watching, and what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

This week I’m joining up with Kimba at Caffeinated Reviewer, Deb at Readerbuzz, and Kathyrn at The Book Date.

What’s Been Occurring

My husband has been running every day this week for either work or a play he was rehearsing for but he still wanted to go to lunch and a used book sale 45 minutes away from us. We spent the morning and part of the afternoon doing that and I came home with a large stack of books, some children’s books, and some cozy mysteries. Today they had a $ 5-a-bag sale so we filled up two bags.

Little Miss picked out four for me but I rejected the one because I am not a huge fan of the author.

I told her I liked the cover very much though and thanked her.

Little Miss picked out several books with animals on them.

The Husband picked out a number of books, including two he had been looking for other places.

Today we will go see The Husband in his play. They are performing The War of The Worlds radio drama.

What I/we’ve been Reading

Currently:

Right now I am reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodges Burnett, The Proverb of the Divine Streusel by Sara Brunsvold, and at night I’m reading a cute, short cozy mystery called A Troubling Case of Murder on the Menu by Donna Doyle.

Just Finished:

This past week I finished Murder in an Irish Village by Carlene O’Connor and Nightfall on Predicament Avenue by Jaime Jo Wright.

I hated Wright’s book by the end and will not be endorsing it in the future.

I liked Murder in an Irish Village and purchased a couple of other books in the series on the Kindle.

Soon/eventually to be read:

The Mystery at Lilac Inn by Carolyn Keene

Death At A Scottish Christmas by Lucy Connelly

Murder Always Barks Twice by Jennifer Hawkins

What everyone else is reading:

Little Miss and I are reading The Middle Moffat at bedtime.

The Boy is reading Horus Rising and The Pearl by John Steinbeck.

The Husband is reading … well, I have no idea. He’s been so busy this week I don’t think he’s even had time to read.

What We watched/are Watching

This past week I watched Dr. Quinn Medicine Women, To The Manor Born, and yesterday  I watched a marathon of As Time Goes By and then a couple episodes of Mary Berry.

What I’m Writing

I finished Cassie and this week I  hope to write some blog posts and then start Gladwynn Grant’s third book.

On the blog I shared:

What I’m Listening to

I’ve been listening to an audio dramatization of Jane Austen books. Right now I am on Mansfield Park.

Blog Posts I Enjoyed This Past Week

Cards and Scrapbooking Pages I made by My Slices of Life

Joy in Imperfection by Ink Torrents

Words for Wednesday by Mama’s Empty Nest

  1. I went to the Galveston Library sale one week, and when I stopped by the library the next week, I was told that all the remaining books would be given away. Yes, given away. Naturally, I carried out as many as I could. I’m glad to see that you found some good books.

It’s been a long time since I read The Middle Moffat. I looked it up, and I realized I read most of these when I was young. I didn’t know about The Moffat Museum; I think it might be a late addition to the series.

  2. I just heard one of the local libraries near me is going to be having a $5 a bag book sale soon. I am not sure I will be able to go (it’s during my working hours), but I might have to see what my mom picks up if she is able to go. Looks like you got quite a few great looking books at the used bookstore sale you went to! I do love a good cozy mystery!

I hope your husband’s show went well! Sounds like fun!

I hope you are enjoying your reading and have a great week!

  3. I just finished The Baker’s Man by an author Erin recommended. I would be in trouble if I bought any more books. I gave so many away when we moved to this house. I had held onto so many picture books from my classroom. I gave them to my DIL who gave them to a new teacher so they’ll, hopefully, spark magic in some little kid!

We have been watching Palm Royale which is really fun. We also watched Poor Things which was just plain weird. I can’t believe it was up for so many Oscars!

    • I haven’t heard of the show or the movie. I’m so behind, marsha! I really need to catch up on all of these shows! As for the books…my stack is so big it’s about to fall over on me..even though a lot of them are digital.

  4. Thanks for the shout out! I just finished a really good book by Charles Martin – The Last Exchange. Have you ever read any of his books? He’s a Christian but his books aren’t preachy in any way at all and they are always clean – never any foul language.

  5. I seem to have lost my motivation for reading this week and haven’t read much of anything at all! I’m sure I’ll be back to reading soon though as I rarely take more than a week’s break from it.

  6. I’ve been reading The Secret Garden to my daughter. I’d never read it before, but did see the movie when I was a kid. It’s kind of weird reading the book and then getting flashbacks to the movie.

    • Same here about the flashbacks to the movie.

I can’t wait to read Little Miss this book. I think we will start it as soon as I finish it so I can read it again. My only issue is how Martha talks about “the blacks” but I know she is coming from the perspective of a woman who simply doesn’t understand about other cultures so I’m trying to cut her some slack.

      • I read that part a few days ago and thought it was weird, but then I remembered the time it was written and it was easier to understand. The more I read, the more I like Martha. I somehow remember the movie being a little harsher, so it’s been pleasant to read. I don’t know how much my daughter’s actually listening to it, but I love that she now has a nice stack of classic children’s literature to carry with her as she gets older.

  7. I’m very impressed that your son is reading The Pearl – is it required school reading? I know I read it when I was at school and found it a harrowing read. Glad you enjoy As Time Goes By so much – they really don’t make them like that, anymore. Beautifully acted and apparently gentle, but with a certain amount of memorable bite nonetheless…

    Have a great week:)).

      • Best of luck with The Pearl – the ending haunted me. I really mind about the overall bleak tone of set texts for school – why can’t children study Terry Pratchett, P.G. Wodehouse or Oscar Wilde amongst the gloom and doom??? Or even The Christmas Carol, instead of A Tale of Two Cities…

        • We did A Christmas Carol a couple of years ago actually and really enjoyed it. We homeschool so we can really pick what we want and have wandered off the curriculum a few times. Can you recommend some more uplifting books? Truly! I’d actually love some ideas. I didn’t remember the ending of The Pearl 🤦‍♀️. It has been so long since I read it, but thought I should expose him to some Steinbeck. Which
Pratchett books would you recommend? My husband has read a ton. Or Woodhouse?
