Sunday Bookends: A lot of snow, some cozy reading and watching, and some more snow

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

As I am starting this post on Saturday night, we had temps  — er – temp of 5. In the morning snow is supposed to start and when it all ends Monday night, we are supposed to have close to 18 inches of snow.

I really hope we don’t get as  much as they say, though, because the high temp is supposed to be 15 degrees, which I think means this will be a very heavy, wet snow. We live in a rural area so that could mean power outages. We have a woodstove that could keep us warm downstairs but we would have to worry about our pipes freezing since we do not have a generator. I believe that’s something we will need to invest in at some point soon. Our neighbors have generators, which I think they purchased after a tornado hit here on our street about six years ago, wiping out power for several days.

I’m sure many of you, if you are in the Northern and Middle U.S. are facing a similar situation as us. Stay safe out there, everyone.

Since we are going to be snowed in, I have been planning how to get through it all without worrying too much. I plan to watch movies, read books, and sip tea or cocoa.

To keep themselves occupied, Little Miss has been video chatting with her friend and The Boy has been chatting with his friend and playing video games. The Husband has been cleaning the house (he’s much better at that than I am) and reading and doing a little work for the newspaper he is at the editor at.

He expects to be snowed in Monday and will work from home. As long as we have power that is.

Erin (www.crackercrumblife.com) and I held our Crafternoon Zoom call yesterday and it was very nice to chat with people from all over the world. We chat while we craft and if you are interested in taking part, please let me or Erin know. It is just a relaxed time to chat, make new friends, and forget about our troubles. We keep conversations as free of politics or hard stuff as much as we can.

UPDATE:

It is 12:24 P.M. as I am finishing up this post and it is about 10 degrees out (-12 C) and we have about six inches of snow on the ground. The snow is supposed to stop sometime tonight and we are expected to have up to 18 inches of snow when it is all done.

What I/We’ve Been Reading

Just Finished

I didn’t finish anything this weekend.

In Progress

I’ve been reading Miss Read’s Village Diary by Miss Read, The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery (a reread), and just started Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien.

I’m enjoying all three. Miss Read’s books are such easygoing, relaxing reads.

Up Soon

I hope to finish Miss Read this week so I can add The Tiger in the Smoke by Margery Allingham to my reading line up.

I read the first few pages about a month ago and it intrigued me.

Cat from Cat’s Wire needs to let me know if it is good or not. *wink*

After that I plan to start the February Agatha Christie Read for the Agatha Christie challenge, Mrs. McGinty’s Dead.

What The Family is Reading

Little Miss and I started The Singing Tree by Kate Seredy. We’ve also been listening to Winnie The Pooh on Audible.

The Husband is reading….

What I/We’ve Been Watching

I loved this YouTube video about how to read more classic books.

And this video about how to cut back on buying books you never read.

I watched After The Thin Man, the second movie in The Thin Man series, yesterday, and earlier in the week I watched episode two of season six of All Creatures Great And Small.

Today I hope to watch another old movie, probably a James Cagney, for my Winter of Cagney.

I’ve had to change my schedule of Cagney movies again because I have found yet another movie that is not streaming anywhere and can’t be found for very cheap on DVD. Two movies now, Man of a Thousand Faces and Angels With Dirty Faces, are going to have to be taken off my list as I figure out how to watch them in the future.

The Husband says these movies are most likely no longer in print and have not been licensed for streaming, hence my challenge in finding them. Man of A Thousand Faces costs $40 most places and is mainly on BluRay and Angels With Dirty Faces (a movie with Cagney and Humphrey Bogart) is on DVD but $19.95. I will probably set the aside for another time and slide two Cagney movies that I can find streaming into my list instead.

  2. Oof, you got 18″ of snow? I don’t think I’ve ever got that anywhere I’ve lived. We’ve definitely had a foot when I lived in Kent in the 80s as I remember wading through it to get to school! Hope you’ve been OK. It was good to drop in to Crafternoon and I enjoyed my curry afterwards (and a sneaky non-alcoholic beer and a late night after that!).

  3. Lisa that is really cold. Thanks for putting it in celsius, as that’s what we use although back in the day many moons ago we had Fahrenheit so I do have a fairly good sense of it. Yes sounds like a generator would be a good safety feature to have. We have seen the USA snow on our news so it has been a big event.

  4. Lisa, may you and your family remain resourceful this week with the colder temperatures. We received at least a foot of snow, more where it drifted. Schools are closed again today, and the rest of the week’s early mornings will feel like nearly -20. I finished watching a film with Greer Garson and Gregory Peck, “Valley of Decision.” It’s pace was a bit slower than I anticipated, but it was filled with a phenomenal cast.

  5. Well, darn! We only got about 10 inches which I love. It’s beautiful. The problem is how cold it is. Jack loves playing in the snow, but he hates being cold. So, those necessity outdoor visits are painful (quite literally) for him. He tries to poop on two legs which is two legs short! But, at least, instead of sniffing everything, he gets it done quickly. I’m sorry I missed yet another Crafternoon. I had a tour and the group was fabulous. They hung around after and talked with me about art and memberships and all kinds of things. I think I might have a couple of groupies!

I hope your power stays on. We were supposed to have high winds but nothing so far. I’m hoping the power stays on. The roads are plowed so we can get out.

    Stay safe and warm, Lisa!

    • So far the power has stayed on. Tomorrow we have windchills of -20 degrees and a high of 11. This whole week is going to be so cold. I’m over it.

We ended up with 14 inches of snow in the end and it is here to stay for a while!
That is so funny about the groupies! Love it! Haha!

  6. No power outages here because of the very cold temps, the snow is dry and powdery, not wet and heavy. No ice either. It snowed all day long Sunday and is still spitting flurries today (Monday), but all is good. Hopefully, the same for you. Stay warm and safe!

  7. Thankfully the worst-case forecast of crippling ice missed us! Yay! It was so cold that we ended up with mostly sleet, which is still bust-your-butt slick, but thankfully didn’t take out the power. 😀 The chickens seem to have made it through as well: they’re staying cozy inside their coop/box, haha

    Stay warm, friend! ❤

  8. It is just now getting close to freezing here; it’s been several degrees warmer than they predicted. And because it has been so dry, most of the heavy rain we got during the last couple of days has drained off or evaporated, so that should be good for driving tomorrow.

My son in East Texas was so worried about a power outage that he got a generator. So far, power has stayed on, but they’ve had quite a bit of snow and ice there, so I hope that doesn’t cause the lines to snap.

I missed the Crafternoon because I was confused about the time. Sigh. Next time.

    • Sorry the time was confusing! We also had to leave a little earlier this time because Kim and I both had a bird drawing class to do at 3 p.m. EST. We will be sending out the final date for February soon.

I hope everyone stayed safe where your son lives!

  9. Our weather is very similar to yours. We are currently at 14, feels like 3, and it has been snowing since sometime in the night. We are in the 11-15 inch range, and currently have 6+inches. We are also supposed to have snow tomorrow, with an extreme weather alert Monday night into Tuesday with wind chills being as low as -25. I am not planning to go anywhere until Tuesday. I am pretty sure I will be out of work tomorrow (if not, I will be disappointed, LOL). The schools are already closed and my husband is on a 2-hour delay. Stay warm and I hope and pray you all keep power. Have a great week!

    • You can send me your email address through the contact form or email me at lisahoweler@gmail.com and we can add you to the mailing list for the crafternoons. It doesn’t commit you to anything but lets you know when they are in case you want to join. Yes, a lot of us use as a time to sort of “force” ourselves to sit and do something we’ve been wanting to get done or just relax while we chat. I enjoy the time and “making myself” focus on something crafty.

  11. I’m hoing we don’t get as much as they say either since they’re saying 22″! But we won’t know until tomorrow night at 8 when it’s supposed to finally stop. I’m reading the president’s daughter and we’re currently watching Roofman.
