Sunday Bookends: book buying ban and traumatized cats

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

What’s Been Occurring

I am putting myself on a book buying ban in March and April.

I have so many books that I need to read right now. All of the books I chose for my spring hopefuls list are paperback books so that will help me work through that pile.

Also, I think my cats are traumatized by how it was 52 degrees yesterday and today we have snow on the ground. One climbed onto me in bed this morning for cuddles (or her laying on me even though I need to move and then hissing at me to lay back down) and the other reached up to be picked up while I was trying to used the bathroom. I did pick her up and looked down to see the other cat now at my feet. I’m guessing the teenager cat was out in the snow playing with it.

It makes me think of this poster I want to get for our bathroom:

I mentioned on the Weekend Traffic Jam Reboot that Little Miss was sick last week. We aren’t sure what she had but she had stomach issues to start then two days of a runny nose and done. So far, no one else in the family has had it.

It was super hard to see her so down and quiet and miserable.

We didn’t go to see my parents all week to make sure we didn’t give them anything but hopefully we can resume seeing them this upcoming week.

What I/We’ve Been Reading

In Progress

Last week I continued reading Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery.

I added one of The Hardy Boys books — The Tower Treasure by Franklin W. Dixon and a Mildred Wirt Penny Parker book, Whispering Walls. Mildred was the original first author of the Nancy Drew books, if you don’t know that.

They are both quick and light reads, which I need right now.

Up Soon

I’ll  be writing a separate post about my hopeful spring reads later this week, but for now I do know I plan to read A Damsel in Distress by P.G. Wodehouse, The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis, and Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie after I finish these books (or while I’m reading Return of the King since it is my slow read).

What The Family is Reading

Little Miss and I are still reading The Singing Tree by Kate Seredy and listening to The Green Ember by S.D. Smith (though we aren’t fond of the narrator – he is very dramatic and makes the female rabbit sound like a drama queen.)

The Husband is reading Welcome to Pawnee by Jim O’Heir.

What I/We’ve Been Watching

This past week I watched more of The Puzzle Lady and All Creatures Great and Small. I also watched The Bride Came C.O.D. with James Cagney and Bette Davis.

Today I am watching the sermon online and if my YouTube farmer has a video today I’ll watch that.

  1. That cat bathroom sign is adorable! I think all cat moms and dads need to have that! Good luck with the book buying ban. Since we live in a condo the size of a shipping container, my partner and I rarely purchase books unless we know we’ll read them again and again. We’re avid library patrons. Well, he also works for a library, so there’s that. We frequent 4 libraries regularly, and spend 2-3 days at the library each week. 99% of the books I read for my book reviews come from the library. It’s a great way to keep reading, satisfy that craving, and keep the money in the bank. Great post!

    1. The library visits sound wonderful. We live in a rural area and there are times they dont seem to have any of the books I want but I am going to try to visit them more reguarly in the future. I support them at book sales and in other ways, even if they don’t have the books I want. They sometimes can get the books in inter library loans at least.

      1. Library interloans are the best! So many of the books I’ve read have come from libraries too far to get to. Also, a rural library?! That sounds super cozy! We’re in the suburbs, so some of our libraries are more functional than aesthetic. Thank you so much for supporting your library! It’s such an important resource for the community!

Good luck with your book buying ban. I have been trying to be extremely selective about what I buy since the beginning of the year too. I’m glad Little Miss is better and didn’t share her illness with the rest of the family. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. Thanks for stopping, Kathy. I think I found one of your last comments in my spam folder which was annoying. WordPress sometimes does that with regular commenters and it’s annoying but thankfully it doesn’t happen often. I’ve been selective about what I buy too but now I need a full on break so I can catch up on the books I have. We will see how it goes!

  3. Thanks for the shout-out, my friend. We placed a moratorium on buying books for the last few months, but guess what? Saturday while attending a basketball tournament about 40 minutes away from home where our granddaughter was playing, there were a couple hours between games. So we killed some time at a used book store – whoops. We did limit ourselves and came home with only four.

I’ve been trying to read more of the books I have at home too– I do pretty good with not buying new books but can’t seem to stop requesting others from our library. Then when the library books come in I tend to set my own book aside for those and it seems like my books never get read!

It seems like my cats would lie between my legs, pretty much trapping me in bed. When we switched to dogs, they would sleep at the foot of the bed. Jack is not very trustworthy so he sleeps in his kennel! I’m reading one of the Robert Thorogood books, the latest one, I think. We’ve been watching “The Traitors” which my daughter loves. I am enjoying it, but I don’t think Mike is.

  6. LOL, the cats aren’t the only ones getting trauma from the weather! It’s enough to give on emotional whiplash. Good luck with the book buying ban…I have no plans to buy anything soon (I did just order a book today, insert face palm), but I do have preorders that will be coming in over the next few months. I am also REALLY trying hard to read my own books…and books in series, LOL, so I am using the library a lot too. Have a great week and I hope you all stay well.
