Sunday Bookends: A trip to a used book sale, the same books, more canal journeys

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

I want to start by sharing that today is my sister-in-law Kim’s birthday so happy birthday to her. She had a heck of a 2024 and is an overcomer. Looking forward to her having a much better 2025.

I shared a bit yesterday about our week last week, which was fairly uneventful, other than a trip to a used book sale at a library near us. I picked up 19 Hard Boys Mystery books for 50 cents each. That was a fun find. These books, like Nancy Drew, are a bit dated, of course, and written for younger kids but they still have pretty good mysteries. They are also a fun escape from life.

Little Miss also picked out some cozy mysteries for me to try out. She’s picked out a couple duds over the years but also some very good ones so we will see how this bunch works out.

You can read more about our week last week here.

I wish I had something more exciting to report but I am still reading The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murders by Joanne Fluke, The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, and The Two Towers by Tolkien.

I did finish Whose Body? By Dorothy Sayers last week.

The Husband is reading Big Trouble by Dave Barry.

I’ve still been watching Great Canal Journeys every night. Not much else. The Husband has been watching Shogun.

I watched an episode of Great Canal Journeys when they visited Scotland and I was absolutely blown away by this huge device that lowered their boat from one level of the canal to the larger canal below and two huge steel statues of horse heads they visited during the episode.

I watched Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris as well last week and will be watching How to Steal A Million today or tomorrow.

I’ll also be watching another Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries episode this week so I can write about it on the blog.

Last week on the blog I shared:

A book sale, a trip to a garden center, and what’s up with the turkey vultures in our area?

On the Frontier by Transmissions from the Northern Outpost (I’m biased. This is my brother)

Nadine’s Private Island by Cat’s Wire

  1. Watching new seasons of Wolf Hall and Call the Midwife. How to Steal a Million is tonight! Reading another British Library Crime Classic (“Tour de Force” by Christianna Brand); writing lots of notes and blog posts too. Doing: The highlight of the week was being part of the Hands Off rally at our capitol but also got spinach and lettuce planted and some yard clean-up!

  2. Wow! What a bargain with the Hardy Boys books! They are on my TBR list, as I have never read them. Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, by Joanne Fluke, was my gateway book into cozy mysteries and into reading in general. Once I read it (just about 4 years ago), I was hooked on cozies and never looked back. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

  3. I’m glad you enjoyed my post about Nadine and her island! I’m not sure there would be enough space for all of your books there 😉
I’m slowly making my way through the Great Canal Journey and informed my sister that we will do that for a vacation. She’ll be responsible for the locks and I will steer (oh, that would so end in disaster, lol!).

  4. I love The Pitt. Noah Wylie is excellent in it. I, also, watch Survivor, Chicago Med, PD and Fire. I should be trying to cut back on TV viewing though 🙂

You did well at the book sale. I used to love the Hardy Boys. I read the first Joanne Fluke book and still need to get back to that series. Enjoy all your books.

Hope you have a great week!

  5. Happy birthday to Kim! I haven’t had much time to watch much of anything but we do watch The Pitt and Ghosts without fail. That’s all I’ll make time for. Those photos are so pretty! Have a great week!

  6. I tried to watch Shogun, but I don’t like subtitles. I’ve heard it was really good. We used to have so many Hardy Boys books. A guy my husband worked with gave them to him. I took them to school for my class library. I think the teacher who inherited my classroom took them with her when she left the school.

    • Subtitles annoy me some too but it wasn’t too bad for the one episode I watched with my husband.

My husband’s boss has an entire collection of the originals in the basement of their business but I have a feeling they are not in great shape.

    • The last couple times we’ve gone down there haven’t been a ton of good ones and I know there are treasures in their bookshop but I have to be careful or we will spend too much – even with their super awesome prices.

  7. I love to visit used bookstores. I’d hoped to visit some bookstores on the Houston bookstore crawl yesterday, but we got sidelined by the expected bad weather (though the bad weather never arrived—not sure if that’s good or bad). Maybe we will get out today.

I am so glad I had an opportunity to rewatch Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

  8. We’ve been watching a lot of episodes of Homestead Rescue.. which I both love and hate. It’s fun to see the different ways people live off the land but it gives my husband ideas and I have to remind him I am NOT the homesteading type.
