Sunday Bookends: More cold weather and switching back and forth between books

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

The weather is so cold in our area that we are doing our best to conserve heating oil by dressing in layers, wrapping ourselves in blankets, and using microwavable rice packs to warm our feet and laps. This might sound dystopian to some, but I have actually been having fun with it and enjoying my little blanket nests and my warm rice packs. Check back after our planned arctic cold snap this week and see if I still see this all as an adventure. Of course, my attitude will also plan on whether or not I need to go out in the cold on any of the days that the weather is supposed to be so cold.

I talked a little about what else has been going on in our world in my Saturday Afternoon Chat yesterday.

I’ve been switching between The Tuesday Night Club (Miss Marple) by Agatha Christie and Every Living Thing by James Herriot.

I read Miss Marple during the day, usually, and James Herriot right before bed.

I am enjoying them both, but Herriot’s a bit better. Both are a collection of short stories with some connections, such as characters. I am not a huge fan of Christie’s writing style at times and this format, which involves people sitting around and telling each other stories, is a bit dry to me. The stories are good but it does get repetitive for every story to feature someone telling a story they supposedly don’t have an ending to, Miss Marple to solve the case, and then the person telling the story to go, “Actually, I do know what really happened. Let me tell you.”

It’s all a bit tedious but there are some humorous moments and quotes from Miss Marple so I am pushing through.

I also just started Nancy Drew: The Sign of the Twisted Candles by Carolyn Keene.

I am itching for a good novel after these two, which I will finish this week, so I am planning to start A Fatal Footnote by Margaret Loudon, which is a cozy mystery.

I am listening to Frankenstein while doing my dishes.

Little Miss and I are also reading Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare.

She is reading (here and there) Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban.

The Husband is reading Starter Villain by John Scalzi.

This past week The Husband and I watched the first part of Going Postal on Peacock. I watched a lot of Victorian Farm and more All Creatures Great And Small (even going back to the beginning for fun).

I also watched Angels Over Broadway from 1940.

  1. It sounds like you are well prepared for the cold. I don’t fare well in cold and so don’t envy you the freezing and below temperatures. I really like Agatha Christie, but prefer her novels to her short stories. It’s been awhile since I read anything by her though–so who knows what I would think now. I have yet to read Frankenstein, but hopefully one of these days. Starter Villain is on my to read list. I hope your husband is enjoying it! I hope you have a good week!

  2. It’s going to be frigid here, too. We got snow Friday night and more on Saturday. Then the wind picked up so I have no idea how much we got. I finished The Long Walk only to discover it probably wasn’t true. It was a deep book so now I’m reading something light. We finished Younger and tried the new Nosferatu. It didn’t appeal so we started Severance thanks to Erin!!

  3. I quite enjoyed the adaptation of Going Postal! I am currently listening to The Truth which is similar but in this case it is about the establishment of the first newspaper. It is a lot of fun, as Pratchett generally is!

    Have a great week.

  4. We are stuck in the middle of the cold blast too! I will pray that neither of us, or our families, lose power thru it all this week. We’ve been watching a favorite TV series of ours from a few years ago: Timeless. It’s about time travel, one of my hubby ‘s favorite genres. Had to check it out from the library since none of the free streaming services have it!

    • Ooh! I must look those up.

So, yeah, Nancy Drew books are pretty simple and sometimes ridiculous but they were written for young people back in the day so I overlook that. I giggle at some of the aspects of the books and that is really half the fun of reading them. The mystery themselves do hold up well much of the time at least.

  5. Blanket nests are the best! I really cannot read multiple books at once. If that’s happening it means they aren’t great books. Which is why I can see why you’re doing that with The Tuesday Night Club. Funny how I didn’t see that until I started responding. Have a great week!

    • So here is the thing with the multiple books…I can’t actually do it either. what I really do is start a few books and whichever one captures my attention the most gets read more and the others get pushed aside. Why I like having more than one going is because if I am not in the mood for one genre at one point, I can switch to the other genre. Usually, though, I take one of those books and exclusively finish it up and then go to the other and just move down the line. I can’t really read one book one part of the day and pick up another the other part and then another at another point in the day. That gets very confusing for my poor little brain. Ha! It is just sometimes I don’t feel in the mood for a mystery so I want a light, cozy story like Herriot’s or vice versa.

  6. I’m juggling so many books at once I’m starting to stress myself out about it! LOL. I had 5 or 6 of my holds come in at the library and I’m trying to make my way through those as well as finishing up a few books on my Kindle that I’m supposed to be reviewing for NetGalley. I did finish one this morning that’s coming out next month that I really enjoyed called If I Lost You where a mom is struggling with her life and the health of her youngest child when her biological mom that had given her up for adoption when she was little comes back into her life. It was one that really tugged on the old heartstrings. I’m hopeful to finish up at least one other book today since it’s snowy/icy out and I only plan to curl up in front of the woodstove and read.
