Sunday Bookends: It’s hot. It’s hot. It’s way too hot. And reading.

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watching, and what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

This week I’m joining up with Kimba at Caffeinated Reviewer, Deb at Readerbuzz, and Kathyrn at The Book Date.

What’s Been Occurring

We have been sweating. We will sweat more this week. We will try to go swimming and maybe do some other things as family since The Husband has this next week off work. I am ready for Summer to be over. I’m sorry Summer lovers but I hate the heat. If it can be 65 to 70 for the rest of Summer, then it can stay. Otherwise – buh-bye *wink*

If you want to read about how much I want Summer to go away and Autumn to come, you can read my post from yesterday.

What I/we’ve been Reading

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery

Live and Let Chai by Bree Baker

The Chosen Kids Saga Book One: Encounter at the Dunes by R.W. Ruiz (not related to the show The Chosen/children’s book)

Return to Gone Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright (reading with Little Miss on nights we don’t fall asleep early)

The Sentence is Death by Anthony Horowitz

Renee by Sandra Ardoin

Dandelion Cottage by Carol Watson Rankin

Clueless At the Coffee Station by Bee Littlefield

Little Men by Louisa Mae Alcott

What We watched/are Watching

I have been rewatching All Creatures Great And Small (the modern version) and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew series (more on that later this week), but not a lot else. I’ve been reading and writing a bit more lately.

What I’m Writing

I am working on Gladwynn Grant Shakes the Family Tree (the title is tentative at this point), which is the third book in the Gladwynn Grant Mysteries. I’m having fun writing it and I hope you’ll have fun reading it.

I don’t mention it a lot here but if you want to read the other two books you can find a link to them in the My Books section in the menu at the top of the page.

I’m also offering 50 percent off annual paid subscriptions to my Substack newsletter/author site. I’ll be offering sneak peeks, author interviews, and several other perks on there and this week added an epub version of Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing to all paid subscriptions.

This week on the blog I shared:

What I’m Listening To

I am listening to Live & Let Chai by Bree Baker when I am driving somewhere, while also reading the ebook on Kindle.

Music-wise I am listening to Anne Wilson’s Rebel album.

Now it’s your turn

Now it’s your turn. What have you been doing, watching, reading, listening to or writing? Let me know in the comments or leave a blog post link if you also write a weekly update like this.

It has been pretty hot in Boston also! I am so glad I made the investment in central air about seven years ago.

If you and your daughter enjoy Dandelion Cottage, I would also recommend the Betsy-Tacy books. Depending on her age, you could start with Betsy Tacy and Tib or Betsy-Tacy Go Over the Big Hill. They are about best friends in Minnesota at the turn of the century and are my favorite children’s series.

    1. Thank you so much, Constance. I am certainly going to write those book names down! I’m reading Dandelion Cottage on my own this week and then I am pretty sure she and I will be reading it as soon as we finish Return to Gone Away.

  3. I’m sorry to hear you’re melting with the heat:(. Our July seems to have reverted to April – cool and windy with lots of showers. The temperature is struggling down in the low 60s… While I’m relieved not to have the heatwaves of last year, it would be nice to see the sun. Oh well! No wonder you’re reading so much. I hope that the coming week brings some cooler weather.

It’s hot here in north Florida, I stay in and read or find a puzzle or something to occupy me. The Horowitz book is on my radar and I loved his Magpie Murder series.

Currently watching an older tv show called Tour of Duty aboout Vietnam. Looking forward to some new DVDS from the library as we don’t have cable. Have a great week!

Oh, the heat! The humidity has lessened a bit, but I’m wondering what will happen when Beryl hits us. We’re supposed to have rain, which is a good thing.

I’ve finished two books in the last two days! Both were good and by the same author, Laura Pearson. Now, I’m reading something lighter.

Mike discovered another Star Trek series we haven’t yet watched so that’s what we’re watching. We’ve also been watching this guy on YouTube who visits cemeteries to show strange headstones. I think it’s Mr. Dark’s Neighborhood.

    Here’s to an early autumn!

I don’t like the summer heat either. I was ready for summer to be over on the first day it began! I enjoyed Live and Let Chai. I’m going to continue that series soon. Have a great week! 🙂

Yes! I hate summer too! At least when the temps are 90+ I can take 80s-90s. We had a 112 day here and that’s unusually hot for Northern California. Thankfully, it’s cooling down this week. Love that cover for The Blue Castle. Happy reading and writing and have a great week!

  8. It’s funny how we seem to adapt somehow to the most difficult weather in the places we choose to live. I could never live where you have to drive in snow, for example, and I think my body would freeze over if I was forced to go outdoors in cold temps. Now the heat?…I wear flipflops with shorts and sleeveless shirts and I’m fine and dandy. If only someone could invent a big air funnel where I could send you some of my heat that you could store up for your winter and you could send down a bit of the cold for our hot days. I’m not sure anyone would be willing to accept the hurricane that is slowly approaching us today, though.

You have lots of great books on your to-read shelf. I don’t know why I have never read Little Men; I loved Little Women.

    1. That would be a perfect arrangemenet. I am okay with some heat but the humidity and the high, high temps are what really get me. I think part of it is my chronic auto immune crap that makes me even more sensitive to it.
