Can you give me a sign, Lord?

Reading the Bible as a reference for a story I’m working on, (Plus I should be reading it more anyhow) I noticed there are a couple of different times it is noted, at least in the NIV version, that Jesus “sighed deeply.” I’m not sure if this translation from Hebrew and Greek is correct or not, but it cracks me up. I can actually see Jesus rolling his eyes in his particular part from Mark.

“The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.” (Mark 8:11)

In my head, this is how it went down: “Seriously? A sign? Why do you people always want a sign?”

Mocking tone: “‘Give me a sign and then I’ll do it.’ It’s like you just want to procrastinate in doing what you know my Father is asking you do to. Just believe it or don’t. Don’t wait for fire from heaven. If it is God’s will you’ll begin to see your path clear, if it isn’t, the path will be closed. I really don’t have time for this. I have others who listen and don’t ask me for signs. Disciples, let’s blow this village.”

And then he pivoted on his feet and walked away.

So anyhow, I have these decisions to make in my life and I need a sign. You think God will give me one?

  1. 🙂 This is great! Since your question isn’t about whether He is who He says He is or not, I’m sure you will get a sign…whether it’s obvious or not however is the “tricky” part! God Bless!

  2. It was the Pharisees that asked .He will not sigh when you ask. I don’t know if He will give an exact sign but He May. The main thing is to be in the same boat as Jesus , Mark 4:35-41, as you travel through life then he will be with you in the storm even if,like the deciles when they thought he was not concerned and sleeping . He did not hear the crashing waves but he heard them There are other different events that happened with Jesus and the deciples boats. Can think of five off hand. This may interest you also: Isaiah 32:21
    21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. >>>> I read this in several translations this morning and they all vary some but, there is a definitive message that the people of Zion would be guided. And we too can be guided by Jesus.
    The lord in the surrounding verses is referred to as Teacher. Jesus is the teacher we have seen in the New Testament and we have the written Word (the Holy Bible)and Jesus sent Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. I do believe in Rhema also but, a person will likely not hear a true Rhema word without knowing written scripture. The point here is to hear and follow Jesus, so whether it means,when you turn or, not to turn ,or which way to turn ; It does mean keep your spirit,soul ,body (your all)focused on Jesus , king of kings and Lord of lords.It does not mean to not be aware of your surroundings but still keep focused. This was written to the people of Zion. I heard it said once Zion was a place ,now Zion is a people “May we all focus,hear,believe accept and follow Jesus.May we hear the Word of the Lord.
