Sunday Bookends: Some comfort shows, mystery reading, pretty views

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

We had some family time this last week with my brother and sister-in-law and my parents to discuss the future, I guess you would say. It wasn’t easy but it was necessary as my parents are both 81 now.

It was nice to have that family time together even though it was short. Luckily, my brother and his wife don’t live too far away, and we hope to visit them when the leaves change color, since they live in one of the prettiest parts of the state.

Nadda.

The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder by C.L. Miller, Gin and Daggers (A Murder She Wrote book) by “Jessica Fletcher” and Donald Bain, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis, and Come, Tell Me How You Live by Agatha Christie Mallowan.

The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder is very good and fairly fast-moving so far. It’s sort of a cozy mystery at this point. Clean. I’m reading it as part of a buddy read with Erin from Still Life, With Cracker Crumbs.

Gin and Daggers is very good and well-written. I don’t think I expected it to be, even though another one out of the series I read was good as well. This is the first in the Murder, She Wrote series.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is obviously good.

Come, Tell Me How You Live is my slow read with a chapter or two a week (the chapters are very long).

Nancy Drew: The Clue of the Broken Locket by Carolyn Keene.

Little Miss and I are reading The Good Master by Kate Seredy and are enjoying it. She is reading a chapter a night before bed, and then I read the chapters the next morning.

I am behind. Oops! Ha! She’s enjoying what’s ahead of me now.

The Husband is reading Walkin’ the Dog by Walter Mosley.

I’ve been watching The Dick VanDyke Show, The Monkees (which I could only find a couple of episodes of), Rockford Files, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Murder, She Wrote, The Chosen and other nostalgic shows that bring me comfort.

The week before last I watched the first couple episodes of season two of the Marlow Mystery Club.

I read the first two books in the series and the second one pretty much made me decide to take a break from the series. I did not enjoy it very much. I’ll see if the season based on it is even better.

Yesterday I wrote about watching an episode of The Monkees that I found on YouTUbe (couldn’t find it streaming anywhere else) and then last night I watched a concert with them from 2001 and it was actually very good. Great music, funny, and just flat out entertaining. Watching it was the most relaxed since Wednesday afternoon. You can find it HERE.

I’m going to start listening to Come Rain, or Come Shine  by Jan Karon this upcoming week as I get ready for Jan’s new book to come out in October!

  1. Ah, those discussions about aging can be difficult. We moved my father-in-law out here near us when he was in his late 80’s and took care of him for the next 8 years – difficult years at times (especially during the pandemic), but we all cherished that time with him.

I just read a Nancy Drew book this week for the first time since I was a kid – SO fun!! And Voyage of the Dawn Treader is one of the best in the Narnia series. I so miss reading with my kids – enjoy this time!

And, wow, Dick Van Dyke Show; Murder, She Wrote; The Rockford Files … and The Monkees! I haven’t seen any of those since I was a kid. I love nostalgia. (Now I have Hey, Hey, We’re the Monkees in my head).

Beautiful photos! Hope you have another good week with good books and comfort TV –

  2. Thank you – that’s reminded me I need to check where I’m up to in Jan Karon and see if I can fill in the later ones! Currently reading a novel about a 72-year-old woman running her first marathon and a memoir about the Covid lockdown in New York when all the rich newcomers flee. Watching Long Way Home with Ewan McGregor and his friend Charlie going round Europe on motorbikes, as well as Great British Sewing Bee (it’s the final tomorrow!) and King of the Hill.

  3. I remember the Monkees and having fun watching it. It’s one of those silly feel good series that help distract from reality. I had been looking for it myself before, but the box sets had long been unavailable when I did.

  4. My parents, who are in their mid 70’s, are very active physically and mentally, but just recently have experienced some scary health issues. It’s an unwanted reminder that time is growing short.

It’s looking quite green where you are still.

Wishing you a happy reading week

  5. I googled it yesterday, and the Internet says it’s on Tubi. Now, we know the Internet is never wrong, but I honestly haven’t checked it.

Unfortunately, neither Mike nor I had to make plans for our parents. They all passed at relatively young ages. It’s a gift that’s not really a gift. But, I do see my kids looking at us and thinking…! I have to keep reminding myself I’m no spring chicken! This chick thinks she’s in her 40s when the reality is I’m so daggone close to 70 it’s frightening! Even seeing that number completely blows my mind which gives you yet another clue as to how old I am. The next thing you know I’ll be saying, “Groovy!” Hahaha!!! I guess I can say I’m young at heart and even younger in thought!

I hope your week is one of joy, Lisa!

    • I tried to believe Google but it turns out Tubi just as a couple of documentaries.

Growing older ain’t for the faint of heart I suppose. Ha! I have a biggish birthday coming up this week and I guess I’m just happy I’m here. Sometimes I wondered if I would get this far! I hope you have a super joyful week too and if the whole week can’t be then I hope you have a couple joyful days at least!

  7. It was a hard week, and I am sorry you are having to make decisions about your parents. I get it. My mom just turned 71, but will not make it to 81, her doctor has given her a year, maybe two, she has terminal cancer. We are doing a family reunion next weekend, to get all my siblings and mom together one last time before she passes. It has been 13 years since we were all together, long overdue. I hope you have a great week!
