Sunday Bookends: Hot weather and a pretty Little Women book plus what I’m reading

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watchingand what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

The heat this past week was awful. Just awful. We couldn’t get out house to cool down part of the time. But we survived and are experiencing much nicer and cooler temperatures now.

I haven’t been adding a lot of books to my shelf lately, but I thought I’d share this lovely Little Women book I recently bought from an online used bookshop.

It is an illustrated copy from the 1970s and I absolutely love the feel of the book overall, the illustrations inside, and the beautiful outside of the book, under the outside cover.

I know I will be rereading Little Women this year and other years. I might not read it all the way through again, but there are favorite sections I will definitely read over and over after I finally read it for the first time last year.

When I posted about this edition on my Instagram, several people commented that they had the exact same copy. Do any of you have a copy like this too?

I am still reading The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie but will have it done later this week. I’m not sure what I think of this one, but will probably go for a Miss Marple book for my next Agatha read.

I am also reading The Clue in the Diary by Carolyn Keene. It is a Nancy Drew mystery and it is the first book where she meets Ned Nickerson, who readers of Nancy Drew will know is her boyfriend throughout the series.

I am reading The Imitable Mr. Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse off and on.

I just started The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh. It is too soon for me to decide if I will like it or not.

Up next I hope to read Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis.

Little Miss and I are listening to Prince Caspian at night but she can hear it better because the phone is closer to her and I am closer to the air conditioner, which means I really can’t follow the story at all. That’s why I am glad I am going to be reading it soon.

The Husband is reading Glitz by Elmore Leonard.

The Boy is listening to Perturabo by Guy Haley. It’s a Warhammer book.

Little Miss just started the fourth book in The Harry Potter series, Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling.

I rewatched The Manchurian Candidate with The Boy last night. I picked up even more than I did when I watched it. Earlier in the week I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks and an episode of Ludwig. This week I hope to watch Agatha and Me With David Suchet, more Ludwig, and Gaslight with Angela Lansbury for my Summer of Angela.

This week on the blog I shared:

Newsletter for June: Gladwynn books on sale and a update on book four

Weekend Traffic Jam Reboot June 27 (In memory of Patrick Weseman)

Hodge Podge: What is adventure?

Episode Recap: The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, The Mystery of the Fallen Angel

I’ve been listening to old Jack Benny radio programs before bed.

Now It’s Your Turn

  1. That is a lovely copy of Little Women, I particularly like the outside cover! Well chosen. We have had a small heatwave here: I’m fortunate in that my study overlooks the “return” on our terrace house (the kitchen below and bathroom above are on the sticking-out bit then this half of the house is less deep, if that makes sense) and that’s north-facing so basically no sun ever reaches my window and there is always a cool breeze through it. Still had to have a fan, wear an at-home-only dress and rush around the house opening and closing windows!

  2. Oh that is such a beautiful copy of Little Women! I had a version with similar artwork of Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Fun memories! We’ve been watching the new season of The Chosen this month. So good!

  3. Ugg hot weather like that is horrible. I much prefer winter! The Little Women book is a lovely find. I would have read it first in the 60’s but I don’t remember it looking like that. Great find.

    • I like winter more because I can find more ways to get warm than I can to get cooler!

I read Little Women for the first time last year and I had a really light, market paperback that I could just slide in my bag and take with me. This book is more a “read at home” type book I think.

  4. That edition of Little Women came through library donations once – I think it ended up at my mom’s house, lol … I do love the care and attention they gave books “once upon a time” – the illustrations and overall aesthetic. Maybe that’s why we like special editions so much now – we know our books should be prettier!

I’m in a weird limbo where I don’t really want to start something new before July starts tomorrow (LOL) but I also don’t really want to finish the ebook I’m in the middle of … so I’m listening to Josh Groban’s new album on Spotify.

  5. That book truly is gorgeous! I don’t have many books I’d display (if any), but that is one I would definitely have out! I’m finished The Unlikely Yarn of the Dragon Lady and really liked it. I think you will, too (at least, I think you had it on your list. I’m now reading The Secret Life of Sunflowers about the van Gogh brothers. I’m about halfway through it and still trying to figure it out. There are two story lines going through it. We’ve been watching Ginny & Georgia, some YA show, I’m sure. But, I can easily blog while it’s on! Our weather is supposed to cool off, but I’m not sure it will. I no longer trust the weather guy!

    • I do have that one on my list and hope to read it soon. Thanks for reminding me. I may move it up my list. The Secret Life of Sunflowers sounds good!

I also have a healthy distrust of the weatherman now.

  6. I love your copy of Little Women! Mine is not very exciting, LOL! I loved Isadora Bentley, but I know it got some mixed reviews. Maybe once you get further, you will enjoy it more. I hope you have a great week!

  7. I love beautiful editions of books, especially those with illustrations. (BTW, while I’m speechifying, I’ll go further and say I wish more books had illustrations.)

I just put in a request for The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley. I hope we both like it.

    • Little Miss said she is already bored. “There’s too much talking and description.” I looked at what part she was reading and she is a little right but that’s because J.K. was sort of recapping what had happened before and that’s because those books came out like a year or two apart so people weren’t reading them back to back like Little Miss is right now. I told her she can take a little break from Harry Potter and read a more simple, straight forward book with less description and then go back to Harry Pottery and she agreed.

  8. What a pretty copy! I just have a paperback myself.
I just finished another Allingham and I’m still on the German student novel from 1920, a biography, a crime novel by Georgette Heyer, and a book about craft psychology.

  9. The edition of Little Women is a lovely one – what a great find:)). I’ve always found The Pale Horse a bit of an oddity – I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on it once you’ve finished it. Have a great week, Lisa).
