Sunday Bookends: Reading through my autumn TBR, watching old movies, and a new blog feature to share your posts

Sunday Bookends October 8

It’s time for our Sunday morning chat. On Sundays, I ramble about what’s been going on, what the rest of the family and I have been reading and watching, and what I’ve been writing. Some weeks I share what I am listening to.

This week I’m joining up with Kimba at Caffeinated Reviewer and Kathyrn at The Book Date.

What’s Been Occurring

I have to be honest that I’m a little distracted today by what is happening in Israel and I feel like writing a blog post about what I’m reading and doing in my life is pretty unimportant. I’m only continuing because I think we all need distractions right now, no matter how small.

I follow some people who live in Israel and have read some books about the situation in Palestine so hearing the news from the area is extremely upsetting.

I’ll move on for now, though, and relay that I really didn’t do much last week at all but if you want to read about it you can check out my post here.

What I/we’ve been Reading

Last week I finished The Cat Who Blew The Whistle by Lilian Jackson Braun. I enjoyed it for the most part but the ending was strange and a little annoying to me. That happens at times with Braun’s books, but this was at least better than the later ones that were put out and probably not fully written by Braun later in her life.

I am making my way through my autumn reading list slowly, but fairly steadily.

Now I am on to reading Death Bee Comes Her by Nancy Coco and also plan to read a Nancy Drew book for fun (The Hidden Staircase). Death Bee Comes Her was not originally on my list but I picked it up at a used bookstore and it fit well with the theme since it happens in the autumn so I decided to add it in.

The Boy and I are reading Red Badge of Courage still for school.

Little Miss and I are reading Gone Away Lake for school.

The Husband just started a Dennis Lehane book and I’m not sure if he started another one yet.

What We watched/are Watching

Last week I didn’t watch a lot of movies but I hope to watch a couple this week, including The Lady Vanishes for the Comfy, Cozy Cinema with Erin from Still Life, With Cracker Crumbs.

If you want to join us you are welcome to and we will have a link up for you to add your post to.

We did watch some Newhart and I watched an episode of Miss Scarlet and The Duke.

This week I really want to focus on escaping in some good movies, some wholesome things as well, including The Chosen and The Dick VanDyke Show – anything to calm myself inside.

What I’m Writing

I am working hard to finish Gladwynn Grant Takes Center Stage and am almost done. I did push the release date off by a couple of weeks because I was concerned I might not have time to write it, revise it, and send it the editor, and revise it again in time for it to be released on the original date. I wanted to slow myself down a bit.

Once I’m finished with this book, I’ll be continuing to work on Cassie, which is a book that will be released in August of 2024 with the Apron Strings Book Series. It is based in the 1990s so it will be fun to research that decade, which I lived through but have forgotten a lot about. Ha! Not because I was drunk or drugged but because I was lost in my own little world in high school and college.

This week on the blog I shared the Weekend Traffic Jam Reboot with two other bloggers. This is a chance for bloggers to share favorite posts from their blogs for the week. You can still share your posts now and we will be back again on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. to set up the link for everyone who wants to participate.

Also on the blog this week I shared about a movie I watched The Lightkeepers.

What I’m Listening to

I listened to a lot of Brandon Lake this week and other worship music, as well as other Christian artists I hadn’t heard of before in an Apple Music playlist. I needed it.

Now it’s your turn

Now it’s your turn. What have you been doing, watching, reading, listening to or writing? Let me know in the comments or leave a blog post link if you also write a weekly update like this.

  1. I like how you include what you are watching and listening to also! I’ve been meaning to reread a Nancy Drew book – should be fun. And my husband and I both enjoy Dennis Lehane novels. Sounds like some good comfort TV.

I’m late with my weekly visits – hope you’ve been enjoying your books, movies, TV, and music this week!

  2. I have been packing mostly. Can’t write about it on the blog since my estranged family found my site. Writing does help relieve the stress, so that’s frustrating. In between leaving the house when potential buyers come over to look through the house, and trying to figure out what to take with us on our new adventure across the country to another state…I haven’t had any time to do anything fun like reading.
I did take a couple days off to read The Duggars:20 and counting. I picked the book up in Arkansas while on vacation. It’s signed by all the family too. Interesting to read, especially since a couple of the kids grew up to write their own version of things. heartbreaking to compare the two.
I bought the book killers of the Flower moon since I was traveling through that area when I came across the book, but I haven’t had a chance to start reading it yet. It’s a movie now. It’s about the Osage murders and the birth of the FBI.
I agree with you about the events around the world right now with how hard it is to blog about things that seem so unimportant but people do need their mental health breaks from all that they are seeing right now. Otherwise it is just too much to stay focused on. Fall is here which means pumpkins and spending time with family. Have to make happy memories for the ones we love. Best to keep it all in our prayers and trust in God. It is heartbreaking what is happening in the world these days. I could write so much just about the city I am living in…just horrible.
When I find some more time I will have to go back and read some more, I do enjoy your photos, can’t wait for your Fall photos.

    • I hope the move goes well. Where are you going again?

I feel bad you can’t have comments on your blog. I’d just let that family member see things if they want to. It seems like it’s more their problem than yours if they are that bitter about a blog. We have to do what we have to do though.

I hope I can get some more fall photos – I’ve been either down or dealing with a sore tooth and I didn’t go out and take photos like I should have this year

  3. I haven’t read anything this past week; I have a few books on my nightstand but just feel like I’ve lost my motivation to read. I’m hopeful that with a few new books coming in from the library I’ll get excited about reading again.

  4. I’m recovering from a UTI, so this weekend I laid in the bed and watched movies on YouTube (off and on-I did have to do some housework.) I did not know until recently how many old movies are on YouTube. I’m so pleased. I watched: The Best Years of Our Lives, A Yank At Oxford, The Man From Snowy River. I also watched several episodes of Forgotten Way Farms.

    • I like Forgotten Way Farms and am just getting ready to watch her latest. I didn’t know all those movies were on there. I knew some were but not those! You have a UTI after everything else you’ve been going through?! Ugh! Get better soon! They are just awful!

  5. When things happen in this world, I sometimes wonder if I should write a blog post or not. I did write one after the Nashville school shootings and figured I’d lose some subscribers. I didn’t, immediately, but may have later. It’s not important to me if people leave over something like that, though. I just wish this world’s leaders could figure it all out. And, I’ll stop at that.

I finished The Alice Network which was historical fiction about female spies in Europe during WW1. I don’t usually read war fiction, but this one slowly drew me in. I think it was probably quite accurate in its portrayal of some of the people. I also finished The Paper Daughters of Chinatown about human trafficking in 1900 San Francisco/California. After those two dark books, I switched it up to Your Typical Family, or something like that.

We are still watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel though we may be on the last episode. While I haven’t enjoyed every single episode, I will feel a little verklempt (sorry, I had to) when it’s over.

I hope you have a wonderful week, Lisa!

    • Yes, I am not going to do a post on the specific issues going on in Israel as I have many, many thoughts because people misinterpret so much anymore. But, yes, I wish they could all figure out peace as well as …. well, I can’t say more. lol.

I watched a lot The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but she really started to annoy me. She just seemed so selfish all the time and I had hard time feeling sorry for her as the show moved on. I mean, part of the point of it all was that was her character – selflish and ambitious at times. I bailed somewhere in the second season but I would like to go back and finish it.

I loved Tony Shalub in it. He was perfect.

      • I know exactly what you mean about her selfishness. I kept saying to my husband, “How does she afford those clothes?” Of course, he doesn’t have a clue when she says it’s a Dior. I was always asking where the children were, too. We are almost done with the series, but it definitely had some ups and downs. Tony Shalub’s character definitely changes as the show goes on…that bothered me, too!

        • But it’s also her character and that’s part of the charm I guess? I could do without Susie (I think that’s her name) f-bombs too 😂😂 But there is a lot of good acting in the show.
