Winter is coming in a bit like a lion this year as the North was lashed with wind and rain part of this week. We spent part of our week inside, under covers, watching movies and sometimes reading books.
Early in the week I rolled my ankle and thought I was on the way to the ER like Marcia at The Write Stuff (who visited the ER for the first time in her life twice in a week!) but luckily that didn’t happen. I wish I had an exciting story to go along with that ankle story but I was literally only pushing my son’s bike in the driveway to take it to the van so he could take it to his grandparents and my ankle just turned. That was all. Very boring story. The ankle was sore off and on all week but nowhere near a crisis. One day I thought it was swollen and then remembered I just have fat, Hobbit-like feet and ankles and it wasn’t actually swollen.
At the end of the week, I also feel in a hole at my parents, with the foot of the ankle I had twisted going straight down and sending me to the ground. My son thought it was hilarious because he said one moment I was standing and the next moment I screamed and disappeared. Luckily, I didn’t damage it worse and was still able to go to a community event with my husband later that evening.
Speaking of Hobbits, I have stalled on reading the book and I have no idea why because it’s a good book. Here is a goal for this week: finish the book, like my son who is finishing it up for schoolwork.
Speaking of books, I haven’t made a ton of progress on that front but did manage to progress in Diane Moody’s Memphis & Me and have made a list of other books I plan to break into this week, including:
- Village School by Miss Read
- Leota’s Garden by Francine Rivers
- Rhythm and Renewal by Rebekah Lyons
- The Misadventured Summer of Tumbleweed Thompson by Glen McCarty (middle school book for book discussion for our homeschooling group)
As for what I’m watching, I watched Paul, Apostle of Christ with Jim Cavaziel this week and wow, it was powerful. Jim is playing Luke this time, instead of Jesus. Paul is played by James Faulkner who gives a powerful performance of a man at the end of his 30-year journey as a missionary for Jesus. Paul is in a Roman prison, charged by Nero with burning half of Rome, which of course he denies doing. The movie shows that the fire was more than likely started by Nero himself, who then used the Christians as a scapegoat to take the blame off himself. The Christians are currently living in hiding, with many being murdered because of their faith, trying to decide if and when to leave Rome to seek a more hospitable situation in Ephesus. Luke sneaks into the prison to visit Paul and record his message to his fellow persecuted Christians.
There is some fiction thrown into the story to add some drama, but that doesn’t take away from the crux of the Bible-based portions of the movie.
The movie was very moving, thought-provoking, deep, and should be watched with tissues close by. I honestly had a hard time watching it and not thinking of our world today and how persecution against people because of their faith is not something of the past, but something of the present that is continually getting worse. I tried not to envision that one day Christians (or people of other faiths) will be marched to the coliseum to be eaten by lions like we and others were in the day of the Romans.
To lighten the mood a little (ha!) I’m also watching a British sitcom called “One Foot in the Grave” (it doesn’t sound lighter, does it?) about a cranky man who has been forced into retirement. The series has both humorous and heart breaking moments so it’s a bit of a roller coaster ride emotionally, but the humor is up my alley – a little dark and odd.
I snapped only a few more fall related photos this week, partly because we had rain and wind two days in a row and it was miserable weather to photograph in and partly because I didn’t go many places to take photos featuring the fall foliage.

Oh my goodness, this is what I was looking forward to this month…your Fall photos. I knew they would be good. Like I have written before, you have an excellent eye there for photography. I love the colors. As you know we don’t get Fall here in the Desert. I was able to get a couple shots of some Fall colors up north when we drove up to check on Our Little Red House. I will be sharing those photos in a couple weeks hopefully. I love those photos of your children, they look so happy. I hope your ankle is better, that is no fun. Oh, and I am reading Martha Inc. right now. I love reading biographies.

Glad you didn’t end up hurting yourself more. The lovely weather may be the cause of the Hobbit withdrawal. Hopefully, you pick it back up. The pictures are lovely!

I’m sorry you have been having so many ankle problems! Those are not fun. Maybe you should just ride around on a scooter from now on. 😀 You photos are so pretty!! I haven’t had much time for reading, other than The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe with my daughter for school. I’ve been trying to catch up on church sermon podcasts while I’m cleaning, but my mind starts wandering. lol!

That happens to me too with podcasts sometimes. Which sermons do you listen to? From your own church or somewhere else?
I think the scooter might be a good idea. The ankle is bugging me today. Sore when I bump it against anything. I just think the bone is bruised. I’ll give it another week and see how it is.

I’ve been listening to the preacher from the church we used to go to because I love his sermons, just not the church. And Lifechurch sermons, too. I love Craig Groeschel.

You love his sermons but not the church? Hahaha! Well I am intrigued! I think we have a church like that near us. The church is just so big and I’m not a fan of huge churches but I like the pastor’s sermons. I’m a fan of Jimmy Evans from Marriage Today, Steven Furtick, and sometimes Chip Ingram. I think I’ve heard Craig before. I’ll Google him and see if he’s who I’m thinking he is.

The church people are very talkative, making it difficult to hear. Most of them are there for visiting, not church. There’s a lot of them there that aren’t like that, but those certain people make it difficult to attend. I’m not a fan of huge churches either because there’s too many clicks and not enough “family.” I like Steven Furtick, too. I forgot about him! haha!

Ah, yes. The “social church folk”. Yes, yes. Been to a couple churches like that, or actually one that comes to my mind. And the clicks! Oh my, yes. It was made very clear, very quick that I was on the outside of those clicks. I did not enjoy that at all.
Steve Furtick had a great one a couple of weeks ago called “Catch A Thought.” Wow. That helped me so much! We started going to a church near us and one of the women there told me Furtick is ” a good motivational speaker but his theology is all screwed up.” I guess she’s only seen clips because I watch the service live and I see his theology as being pretty spot on (with a few things I don’t agree with) and every single week they give two or three alter calls . they never end a service without one. To me that’s more than “motivational speaking” but to each their own, I guess. I didn’t go back to the church, partly because of her saying that (just sick of everyone saying this or that person is”bad”) and partly because I filled out a form as a new attendee and never heard from the church and didn’t hear back when I asked about Bible studies either. I took it that they don’t really want new members.

I’ll have to find that “motivational speech” of his. HAHA! That’s too funny! I’ve listened to some of his and didn’t like him at first, but he grew on me. My husband really likes him, too. I know how it feels to be “left out”. I had been going to a bigger church for a while and signed up for the nursery when they kept begging for help. Nobody ever called, yet they kept begging for help every week. I finally learned it was because I was not a member and member’s class was 2 weeks during the week. No thank you! So I left that one!

Uuugh. I hated the nursery at our one church because my son wouldn’t stay in their younger children’s church class but he was just over the cut off for nursery and the one woman used to scowl at me and ask his birthday. It just wasn’t a very welcoming church.

I read The Hobbit a few years ago, and while I liked it…all those songs drove me batty, if I am remembering correctly.

Thank you for the compliment on the photos. And the ankle thing is just a running list of weird mishaps I seem to have happen to me. Last year I dropped a board on the top of my foot and was sure I broke something. It took more than two months for it to heal. Sigh.

Oh my goodness. You had troubles this week. You sound like me, and you are too young to be rolling your ankles and falling into holes! I’m glad you are doing okay and didn’t break anything.
Thanks for sharing a little about the movie. I’m trying to remember if I’ve ever seen a movie with Paul in it, and I don’t think I have.

What glorious fall colors. I’d take a picture of our trees around here, but all we have are live oaks and pecans and they don’t do much in the way of color, sadly.

I’ve been making my almost 13-year old read from The Hobbit every day and he’s almost done. How sad is that?! But he cheated a little and listened to it while he read. He’s not thrilled that I’m making him do a book report on it and he tried to talk me into watching all three of the movies of it to get out of school work, but I told him I didn’t think that was necessary for him to understand the book. 😉
I used to roll my ankle a lot as a kid and my mom did too so I figured I just inherited her weak ankles. the annoying thing is that the pain is better but if I sit like I often do on the couch, with my leg under me or cross-legged, the outside of the ankle hurts like heck along the bone area. I feel like it’s just bruised and not broke or it would be purple and I’d be in more pain. There was light bruising last week, but it’s gone now, thankfully. I’m a bit accident prone, but this thing with the foot was a bit ridiculous!
That One Foot in the Grave show makes me laugh and cry. Of course Britbox only has three seasons but I found out there were six seasons of it made. Amazon knows how to get us – give you a few seasons of a show you like and then try to get you to buy the rest. Well, ha! They won’t get me. I just found the DVD of all six seasons for — well, $150 😉

Hi, Lisa! So glad your ankle issues didn’t end up with you heading to the ER, either time! It’s not a fun way to spend an afternoon, but at the same time, I was sure glad we had one nearby after my fall! Lovely photos, too. Even though it might not seem like as much fall color as you wanted, it’s look fantastic to those of us living in central Florida. And the color of that sky is amazing! Throw in darling children and a super cute doggie, and I think they are suitable for framing, as the saying goes. 🙂

We are close to an ER too so that would have been a benefit too – except most of the staff at our local hospital are incompetent, but that’s another post for another day 😉 I’m glad the folks down South are enjoying the fall photos, even though I’d have loved some brighter colors. I may have just missed the peak this year somehow. No big deal. Hopefully it will be nicer in the fall and maybe we will have some pretty winter photos this year (even though I’m not a big winter fan!).
