Hey, can you come here for a minute? Yeah, lean in close. I have a secret to tell you that might shock you.
I’ve never – whoo-boy. Can’t believe I’m about to say this.
I’ve never read a Jane Austen book all the way through.
Wince.
I know! It’s a big-time reader sin – especially when you are a female.
I have the books on my shelves and intended to read Pride and Prejudice last year but never got there. Now I’m in the middle of A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens and Little Women by Alcott and I have two ARCs to read before February so I probably will not read a Jane Austen book in January.
I will, however, be watching movies based on Jane Austen’s books with Erin from Still Life, With Cracker Crumbs during the month of January. If you want to join in, we are inviting you to do so and to add any blog posts you write about Jane or the movies to our linky. The link up will be at the top of my page starting next week.
(As an aside, our Comfy, Cozy Christmas link up is still live if you want to add any Christmas-themed or related posts here.)
Here is the list of movies we are watching for the month and I do want to note that for Pride and Prejudice both of us prefer the 1995 BBC mini-series but it is much longer than a movie so we opted for the 2005 movie with Kiera Knightly and what’s-his-face. Sorry, but I don’t acknowledge anyone other than Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Even from the short bit I’ve read of the book, I know that he simply IS Darcy. (Edited to add that I originally called him Mark Darcy here because I was thinking of Bridget Jones’ Diary apparently. Wahahaha!)
Movies and the dates we will be writing about them:
Sense and Sensibility – 1995 (January 11th)
Pride and Prejudice -2005 (January 18th)
Emma – 1996 (January 25th)
Miss Austen Regrets (February 1)
For fun and to kick off the month I will be watching Persuasion on my own and rambling about it on January 4.
Note: You do NOT have to write about the movies on the same days we do. If you watch a movie and write about it on any day you can still post in the link up. Any post about Jane Austen, not just these movies, is also allowed. So, posts about the books are absolutely allowed too!
Have fun with it. Ramble about your love or even your disdain for Jane. Okay, maybe don’t express too much vitriol about Jane. Ha! Ha! We’re trying to keep this fairly positive and fun!

Lean in even closer, Lisa! I’ve read exactly one Jane Austen book (back when I was in college) and have no idea which one it was! So, I guess I need to get busy. I’ve not even seen any of these movies. But, I do love Colin Firth!

Oh I hope I can convince my husband to watch some of these (one at least! Ha) He did watch the whole 1995 series with me, but that was a long time ago! It was my favorite also.

What a way to spend the rest of the winter! Cozy up under a blanket – have drinks, popcorn, tissues at the ready and love every sigh, every glance, every raised eyebrow. Love Jane Austen – what a gift she bestowed.

I’m going to watch that one on my own for fun. I’ve seen the other ones or at least other versions of them but I’ve never seen this one.

Is this the version you recommend then?

I have watched two versions. One I loved very much with Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds. It is slightly longer, and has more of the book in it. (I love the book so much.)
But I absolutely loved the version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones. It is shorter, so they cannot pack quite as much in, but it captures the spirit of the book so well.
One of my friends told me Netflix did a version last year, but I don’t have Netflix, nor do I have a TV, so I have no idea how it was.

I saw a review of the Netflix one and it wasn’t a good review. I don’t have Netflix either so I will probably never see it

I don’t know much about it, but my friend said they took a few liberties, putting a modern twist on the story for a younger audience perhaps. I know the character of Anne Elliot and the decision she made at 17 does not always go down with a young audience. But her story is one I connect to.

It’s the way Sally Hawkins looks at the camera – and the timing of the music, and those tears…oh my.

She’s very good from the small clip I’ve seen. I think I’ll start it today. Isn’t she the mom from the Paddington movies too?

Yes she is – she also played a role on a version of Jane Eyre. She is a very very interesting actress.

I know! It is a nice way to get through our very cold January here. If it is cold.. So far we have not had a super cold winter. Either way it will be dreary so this will be nice.

I hope you’re watching the Paltrow version of EMMA. I think that’s the best filmed version of my favorite Austen novel.

I really enjoyed that version too and it is probably the better one, but I think we are trying the one with Kate Beckinsale for something different. I’ll double check with what Erin thinks. If we do watch the other one then we can compare Gwenyth’s version. *wink*
